DAVID
Hi, I’m David Congreave and this is my assistant, Bethany Rudkin. This week we’re going to be talking about the fastest way to get a website up and running.

BETHANY
Yes and I know all about how to do this because I recently created my new website at *bleep*.com

DAVID
What did I tell you about self-promotion.

BETHANY
Don’t do it or you’ll beat me within an inch…

DAVID
Exactly.

BETHANY
Sorry. I just wanted to tell people about my website *bleep*.com

DAVID
Seriously, stop it. If you want to do something useful, why don’t you tell the viewers how you got your website up and running?

BETHANY
I used a service called Fantastico to install a WordPress blog. It uploads all the files, automatically so I didn’t need to do anything technical to get it working.

DAVID
Fantastico is a service provide by web hosts who use the cpanel interface. I can recommend Hostgator as a web host. They use cpanel and you can get a starter account for less than $5 per month.

BETHANY
You can also choose whether you want your blog to be installed in you root directory, or in a sub-domain folder. For example, my blog is hosted under the domain *bleep*.com, though I could have chosen to install it under *bleep*.com/blog

BETHANY
Sorry

DAVID
Once the blog is installed, you’ll want to spend some time playing around with the settings. But as an alternative, if you’re really pressed for time, you can have a Wordpress blog installed and setup for you at ninjablogsetup.com. If you purchase an account with one of their recommended web hosts, then they’ll do all the work for you, absolutely free. So no excuses – if you’ve yet to get your first website up and running, then this is arguably the fastest and easiest way to get started.

Bethany, anything to add?

BETHANY
Wouldn’t it help the viewers to see an example? Such as *bleep*.com?

DAVID
Right, that’s it, go back to work.

DAVID
Go!

DAVID
And that’s it. If you need more help with this, wordpress.org has a support forum and some detailed articles outlining the process we’ve just described.
So that’s all for today. Have a great day and I’ll see you again next week.

BETHANY
I made you a drink, sorry.

Watch it here…

www.TheLucidClub.com

Part 3 in a series of videos featuring Internet Marketer David Congreave and his assistant Beth Rudkin. This week Beth finally outsmarts David. Sort of.

To ask David and Beth a question, send an email to video@davidcongreave.com

www.TheLucidGuys.com

www.TheLucidGuys.com/scribeseo

DAVID
So what’s new this week?

BETHANY
I learnt how to do search engine optimisationing.

DAVID
You learnt seach engine what?

BETHANY
Optimisationing.

DAVID
Excellent, how far did you get?

BETHANY
What do you mean how far?

DAVID
Well how much did you learn?

BETHANY
All of it.

DAVID
All of it?

BETHANY
YES, all of it. Which part of that sentence is confusing you?

DAVID
I’m not confused, I’m sceptical. I took me months to learn all the different facets of search engine optimisation and you’re saying you’ve learnt all of it in, what, a week?

BETHANY
It was more like… say… an hour.

DAVID
An hour?

BETHANY
OK, it was more like 60 minutes.

DAVID
Ok – so let’s say you’re posting an article on our blog, how would you go about optimising that for the search engines?

BETHANY
I’d paste the article into the Wordpress thing, click on Analyze, and make the recommended adjustments until I get a decent score. Simple.

DAVID
Oh I see. You’re using the Wordpress plugin called Scribe SEO to help you optimise the posts for the search engines.

BETHANY
Yep, it’s really easy.

DAVID
That isn’t really learning SEO is it?

BETHANY
Why not?

DAVID
Well Scribe SEO does the keyword research for you and then tells you what keywords to add and where to put them. I don’t need to use that. Because I spent months learning SEO I can do my own keyword research and I can figure out where to put the keywords myself.

BETHANY
So?

DAVID
So you haven’t REALLY learned SEO, have you?

BETHANY
No, you’re absolutely right, I didn’t waste MONTHS learning SEO. I used technology to achieve the same thing in a fraction of the time.

DAVID
(No comeback)

BETHANY
Don’t you feel a bit stupid having wasted such a big chunk of your life on something that a plugin can do in a couple of minutes?

DAVID storms off

BETHANY
Well, it looks like I’ll have to finish this video off. Don’t waste time trying to figure out all the SEO stuff yourself; use Scribe SEO instead. It’s dead easy to use and it works a treat.

BETHANY
That’s just childish.

Lucid Guys on Internet Marketing – Part 2

24 May

The second episode of The Lucid Guys’ free video series on Internet Marketing is now on YouTube.

Watch it here…

www.TheLucidClub.com

Part 2 in a series of videos featuring Internet Marketer David Congreave and his assistant Beth Rudkin.

To ask David and Beth a question on Internet Marketing, send an email to video@davidcongreave.com

DAVID
Hi. I’m David Congreave and this is my assistant, Bethany Rudkin.

BETHANY
Did you say sister or assistant?

DAVID
You’re both, why does it matter?

BETHANY
Because the viewers need to know.

DAVID
Why?

BETHANY
Because, um…

DAVID
Hi. I’m David Congreave and this is my ASSISTANT, Bethany Rudkin.

BETHANY strums a chord and opens her mouth to sing.

DAVID
Not yet Beth, you can do your song in a moment, first we’re going to talk about article marketing.

BETHANY
Sure, cos that’ll be MUCH more interesting.

DAVID
So we’ve been using articles to get more links to our website and to attract traffic from the article directories. A lot of people think that article marketing is difficult because of the length of time it takes to do, but there are some really good short-cuts if you know how.

BETHANY
Pay someone else to write the articles, use software to distribute the articles. Well done, David, you’re a genius. Can I do my song now?

DAVID
In a minute. It’s not quite as simple as all that. You still need to know how to get articles that are of a decent quality and you also need to know which article software is worth well.

BETHANY
OK – how do you get good quality articles?

DAVID
To get the best out of a ghost writer, give them a good title and a couple of bullet points to work from. This ensures that you get an article with a clear message or teaching point, rather than a generic spin of whatever’s on Wikipedia. So, for example, instead of asking for an article about cats, ask for an article about techniques for brushing your cat.

BETHANY
Why would you want an article about brushing a cat? You just, you know (mimes brushing a cat).

DAVID
It’s just an example. Anyway, once you get the article back, take ten minutes to polish the article and your own personal touch. So you get an original, good quality article in only a fraction of the time it would take you to research and write the article yourself, from scratch. The next step is to distribute the article to as many different article sites as possible.

BETHANY
And for this we use SubmitYourArticle?

DAVID
That’s right. In fact, you’re the one that’s been using the software, so why don’t you tell the viewers about it?

BETHANY
It’s very good. You have to spend a little time in the beginning setting up passwords, etc, but once that’s done it’s very easy to upload new articles. I particularly like the scheduling option, so I can upload four articles in one go and set them to be released at the rate of, say, one per week, for four weeks. That way, it’s a once a month job instead of having to do it every week.

DAVID
Good.

BETHANY
Awesome – well I think we’ve sufficiently exhausted that subject. Can I do my song now before people get bored and click away?

DAVID
Fine. Go ahead.

BETHANY
What’s wrong with my guitar?

DAVID
No idea.

Lucid Guys on Internet Marketing – Part 1

17 May

The Lucid Guys have launched a free video series on YouTube. Each weekly episode lasts for just 1-2 mins and provides a new tip or strategy that can you put to use on your online business.

Watch the first episode below…

www.TheLucidClub.com

Part 1 in a series of videos featuring Internet Marketer David Congreave and Beth Rudkin, his assistant. Sorry, I mean PA.

To ask David and Beth a question, send an email to video@davidcongreave.com

DAVID
Hi. I’m David Congreave and this is my assistant, Bethany Rudkin.

BETHANY
You mean P.A.?

DAVID
What?

BETHANY
I’m your P.A.

DAVID
That’s what I said.

BETHANY
No, you said assistant. But my job title is P.A.

DAVID
And what does the A in P.A. stand for?

BETHANY (confused)
Erm…

DAVID
Anyway, since you’ve started you’ve been learning lots about the Internet Marketing industry. Why don’t you tell the viewers what you’ve learned this week?

BETHANY
Ooh yes, I learned that if you put garlic on every other row, then the zombies are all herded into just two rows making it easier…

DAVID
I was thinking more to do with your work.

BETHANY
Oh. Well, yes… you take two sugars in coffee, but only one in tea.

BETHANY
I learned how to use TubeMogul.com. It lets you distribute videos to YouTube and lots of other websites, very easily, and it’s totally free to use.

DAVID
That sounds great. Distributing videos is good for search engine optimization and it can help to drive traffic to our websites. But aren’t videos difficult and time-consuming to produce?

BETHANY
Not necessarily. Animoto.com lets you create short music videos and it’s so easy it only takes 5-10 minutes to create something really nice.

DAVID
Excellent.

BETHANY
Oh, erm… I’m really enjoying learning about Internet Marketing. You’re a great preacher.

DAVID
Teacher.

BETHANY
Yes, teacher.

DAVID
Great. Well I’m sure our viewers will look forward to finding out what else you’ve learned next week. So… let’s get back to work shall we?

BETHANY
OK. So it’s two sugars in coffee?

DAVID (interrupting)
One sugar.

BETHANY
Oh, one sugar, and in tea..?

DAVID
I don’t drink tea.

BETHANY
Okay. Got it.

Do You Have a Business Mentor?

12 May

What Defines A Mentoring Relationship?

My old Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word Mentor like this:
A trusted counselor or guide; also: TUTOR, COACH

I routinely receive communication asking me for the right formula for education, certification and experience for a security professional. I can’t remember  a time when I received a question asking me if I thought a particular mentor would be of value to a security professional.

If a mentor is as the dictionary suggests, a trusted counselor, guide, tutor or coach, how many security professionals have a coach?   Who is looking after your career, your career moves, your career progression? Who do you turn to when you need an objective point of view and objective outside advice?

Mentors aren’t always readily available or easy to find. It may take hard work to identify and acquire a mentoring relationship.  When I entered the sport of fly fishing, I would have never caught a trout if I hadn’t made the effort to seek out mentors and to occasionally hire a guide or a coach.

I’m a fairly good dry fly fisherman. However, make me fish with nymphs and I still need help.   A buddy is great at nymph fishing so I’m constantly picking his brain to learn his technique.  I’m not there yet.  I still don’t have the fly fishing skill my buddy has.

I’ve done some rock climbing with a number of lead climbers but I’m not a lead climber.   I lack the skills, experience and the expensive rack of equipment one needs to be a lead climber.   To climb, I seek out a guide, tutor or coach to lead the way with their expertise, expertise I don’t have.

In business, it is a good idea to seek out mentoring relationships wherever you are in your career. Since I work on the telephone as an executive recruiter, I frequently turn to someone whom I believe to be one of the industry’s strongest telephone sales trainers.   I’ve been on the phone for 20 years but having a trusted counselor, guide, coach whose sole focus in his business life is to make telephone sales people stronger, continues to be of benefit to me.

So, where does a security professional turn to find a mentor?  If you’re really lucky, your mentor might be your current boss.  This isn’t always the case though.  If you look with the expectation of finding one, you might find a mentor in an ISACA, Infragard, ISSA or ISACA group. You might find a mentor by reading various security blogs and seeking out the authors of those blogs for a potential mentoring relationship. Wherever you have to look to find a mentor, you need to find one!

I paid a fly fishing guide to teach me the tricks of his trade. Perhaps you could think about a paid mentor relationship. After all, isn’t the mentor’s time, energy, experience and knowledge worth something?
